A dingo! Beautiful picture – but how do they get along with domestic dogs?

Thanks Jay, sorry to be so long in replying.

How is he with other dogs? Well, he gets on with them without any conflict, but he does have an entirely different personality. Especially because he has an ego the size of Australia. And so, he enjoys some brief amount of company, but is constantly worried about being in competition, and being ‘top dog’. He even gets jealous if someone wants too much of my attention, or gets too close to me. And, it sounds mean, but he is so smart, that he can be manipulative (subtly) and would do anything to achieve his aims of being: top dog, inside dog, and eating-people-food dog. He learns all our behaviours and will use them against us. It sounds sly, but it is so interesting to watch. You can really understand the impact that breeding through the centuries, has had on dogs, when you compare him to domestic dogs.

He has a different kind of inteligence and awareness of his place in the pack. The hunting instinct is very strong, but there is none of the human-learned instinct about retrieving, or working for the human. I’ve seen him tear things up, and he has a distinct method of hunting and killing (like I have seen a panther do on tv), he is very well behaved though, and not a danger, but it makes me really respect the wild dingos and not want one to come after me.

That being said, I have never known a dog to be more affectionate or to be so bonded to our family. He really craves affection and contact, more than any of our previous domestic dogs. And will, for instances, always try to have at least one foot touching whoever he is sitting with.

I know he must sound spoilt and he really is. We’ve always been quite firm with our dogs, but he has broken every rule. He really is very unusual. I wish you could see him in action. I must try and put a film or two, of him, up on the blog. Thanks so much for asking about him.

English Mum. Yes, and yes.. you’re spot on. It is Taj and he is a dingo (of some sort). We got him from a lady who rescued him from a shelter, so we can’t say for sure that he is 100% dingo. He is officially a German Shepard mix, and so he may be a mixture. Either way we think he is awful handsome.

Moon, wow Mister Moon, that is a very lovely compliment. I was so touched by it, and just.. wow, thank you so much.

Hiya Betty ! Thanks for wanting to know about Taj. :) My answer sort of turned into an essay, but I never thought we’d have a dog like him, and so we do find his differences unique. Big hugs to you.
