I was discussing swallow tattoos in a recent blog post, and it looked like I was talking about my own tattoo. Nope, you were right, I don’t have one, for assorted reasons.

But there was a time one Christmas when I was driving home from the family celebrations. I was in the car with my Mum and tattoos were our topic of conversation, when I suddenly thought of the perfect tattoo for myself. I would get one on my bum-bum, you’re right about that… but I’d have to cover the whole area in the most happy scene imaginable..yes, I told my Mum.. I’d get my whole bum tattooed, with a big toucan on one cheek, and a happy hibiscus on the other. And ! The toucan’s beak would extend onto the opposite cheek, so that when I was walking along it would look like the toucan was talking and flying through the jungle. It’d be a complete tropical scene: beautiful flowers, ferns, and the happy chirping bird.

Now, it’s true that upon hearing this news, my Mum swerved serverely and almost ran off the road. But, do you know what her only real concern was (and yes, she was taking me perfectly seriously).. she didn’t like the idea of a male tattooist having to be so intimate with my anatomy when applying the ink. How’s that !! Isn’t she the coolest Mum.

And it gets better.

I was talking about this to her again the other day, telling her I wanted to mentioned the story to you.. and I said that there are female tattooists now, and she’s all like ”Is there? Well, no problem then. You know  ‘Coastal Aussie’ you’d be a really good tattooist.”

Whahh !! She’s just full of surprises…

Here’s a very quick impression, of the tropical bird talking-as-you’re-walking tattoo.

What do you reckon, would it suit me?

Had a bit of a disaster in the garden. An animal dined on my corn cobs and even half a cabbage. I don’t mind, except that I’ve always had trouble getting corn to fertilise and grow edible cobs. This was the first year I’d achieved it, and I was looking forward to eating my own juicy home-grown corn. Never mind; but what was so interesting to see how delicately the animal stripped the outer leaves and silk off the cobs, only leaving behind it’s dainty little teeth marks. It makes me imagine that we’ve a family of little Borrowers living the garden.

It’s not a song I was familiar with, but I was impressed my Kate’s performance when I watched last year’s ‘Spicks and Specks’ (an Aussie music quiz show) Halloween themed episode. Being almost Halloween time again, it seems an excellent time to share her performance with you.

(I particularly want Jay to see it, because she enjoyed the weirdness of the previous music clip I posted - I’m hoping she will think this on even more strange.)

Kate Miller Hiedke is from my neck of the woods, and I believe she trained at the conservatorium as a classical singer before forging a career performing her own music.

Whether the song catches your fancy or not, you’ve got to admit that Kate displays impressive vocal technique.  I like it because of her arrangement, and I’ll absentmindedly hum snippets during quiet moments of the day. Shame the words aren’t a bit more cheerful, because it isn’t the best move to be walking around singing ‘Psychokiller!’ at odd moments. It’s not a good look. However the lyrics do lend a great ‘melodramatic gothic opera’ quality to the song.

Our neighbour created a bonfire for his big camp-out party last weekend. What a whopper. You  can see my neighbour’s silhouette in the flames ( I was tempted to tell you it’s a ghost). The fire had only just been lit, yet it was already leaping higher and higher into the sky. I like the reflected firelight on the leaves of the gum trees above.

You’d certainly know which house you were looking for!

“When you see I’ve lit the barbie, head on over.”

Works everytime.

A huge thank you to everyone, for your kind words and thoughts concerning my h’injury. I really appreciated every comment. You’re a cracker bunch of people, and as always, you brightened my day and made me laugh with all your encouraging thoughts. Sending huge hugs out to you all.

As you can see, I’m mending well, and I’m aready ’fairy flossing’ around, just itching for more adventures! Thank you again, you’re all champions!
