Forgive the scans, but I just couldn’t wait to get these images up quickly. You see, a short time ago, the talented Marian from Made Marian offered pretty crocheted flower pins to her readership. She’d made them while on holiday, and their sweet colours encapsulatedher blog’s theme and signiture colours.
I put down my name in her comments, and Marian was so generous as to send one all the way over to me in a stylish envelope with pretty Irish stamps of Butterwort blooms (funny name for a pretty flower).
After delighting in Marian’s craftiness I wondered if I had anything that was just right to go with the pin. I couldn’t think of anything, so I set to making a hat inspired by her colours and design – which are doubly cool as her yellow and green, are both Irish and Aussie, colour combos.
I recently borrowed ‘Hip Knit Hats’ by Cathy Carron from the library, and choose this design for my first attempt at adapting a circular pattern, to straight knitting. It’s called Hilda in the book, but I call it the Rocket Hat.
(the Kermit the Frog pin is one ‘The Dozer’ gave me last year, which was also been waiting for the right home)
So, thanks to Marian and her pretty pin, you’ll never lose me in a crowd.

Don't Bug Me!
Butterwort, despite the pretty flower, is actually a carnivourous plant. It has really sticky leaves that trap insects. It encases them in this sticky mucus and then secretes digestive enzymes to break them down. The secretions make the leaves look kind of shiny and glistening, hence the reference to butter in their name.

You’re never going to believe this, but …
I’ve just been doing the treadmill thing, and because my Billy Connelly tape ran out before I was done, I turned to daytime TV (shudder!). Anyway, there was an antique show on, and one of the experts was a Scottish lady – and she was wearing a crocheted pin, just like this!! Well, hers had three flowers, but they each looked about the same size as yours and were even the same colour!!
She was very chic, by the way. The pin looked great on her tailored jacket!

Thanks Marian. Can’t wait to see your next creation.
Bugs, I love carnivourous plants. And after your wonderful description, it all makes perfect sense to me now. I’d love to have you on hand at any outdoor event. It would be like having the world explained to me, at every moment. Too cool.
You knit, Betty? Excellent news. What things do you like to make? I’d love to see some of your projects, if you have any handy.
Kate, that’s wonderfully kind of you. I can’t wait to see what surprise you have in store for me. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, I’ll pop my addy over to you now. Peace out.

Ha ha, no, no pussycat. I did see you. I was thrilled by your comment too.
The computer was needed, and as I stepped away I thought
“Oh no, Jay ! ”
But, now I’m back and I’m so chuffed that you happen to see that broach on tv, and thought of my new pin, and that the lady was so elegant.
I haven’t eaten worms but like all true Australians, I have eaten a witchetty grub.

*Spits worms out* Ptoo! Ptoo!
Thank goodness! Bit chewy those things! Witchetty grub? Um .. no thanks! Ptoo!!
LOL!
It’s true – I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I thought, that’s Aussie’s thingy!! Maybe your friend Marian made one for the antique show lady, too?

Ha ha, witchetty grubs really aren’t so bad. They’ve tree inside them, instead of mud, so that’s a big plus, for me.
I have moments like that too, when I’m instantly reminded of you, or Bugs, English Mum etc. It’s nice, isn’t it. I haven’t mastered crochet myself, but perhaps Marian’s pin was a traditional flower design, and great minds think alike?
Are you back on your treadmill? I slipped off mine over the last two busy days.. must hop back on.

I do that too! In the greenhouse today, my aubergine (eggplant, whatever) had the most beautiful lilac flower and I immediately thought.. ‘ooh, Aussie would love that – hmmm, I haven’t popped in for a while!!’ And here I am and here you are talking about us all!
@Bugs: You’re such a nerd!! (but I love you) xx
PS: I love that hat!!! I would humbly put in an order for a pink one next time you’re knitting, which I promise to wear with pride on my jaunts with Bert down the boat road this winter. xx
