Do you have these where you live? He’s not as impressive as the Jurassic park insect I posted about a few days ago, but I wasn’t ready for this big fella and we both jumped an extra inch off the ground when we clapped eyes on each other
Its a huntsman. They’re fairly common and are harmless, except for the occasional fright they give us. We even have one living under the fridge at the moment.
Somehow I managed to trap a small one in my school shoe once when I was about 13. I never did feel it bite me, but it gave me a good dose of super cool fang marked bites that itched periodically for a few months. The weirdest thing about it was, I’d get two or three bites, then another few a few days later, for what seemed like a week or two. Poor spider, though.
I think I’ll have to write something happier now.

Oooh! I’ve seen pics of those before – there’s a famous one doing the rounds on the message boards of one of these guys hiding behind a kitchen wall clock with just one or two feet poking out to give you an idea of just how BIG he is! It would make my OH run for the airport without even packing. He’s an arachnophobe, and we don’t even have anything dangerous or even very large here.
Must admit, one that size would make me pause for thought before picking it up and taking it outside. I think I’d need a shovel.

Hi Jay ! Aw, your poor OH. Its never fun to be scared of a creature. You would pick up a spider? I could herd a smaller one into a jar, but, yes, these fellas are too big to pick up.

I think spiders like that are the reason that I’m happy to live in Ireland.
